Duration Feature Learning for an Intervocalic Voiceless Velar Stop Consonant in L2 Japanese

چکیده
This study investigates how beginning learners of Japanese language (L2 Japanese) develop the durational features of an intervocalic consonant. Acoustic analyses were conducted on speech data collected from Australian learners of Japanese over a sixteen month period at the early stages of learning. The durations of the intervocalic consonant, and the component durations, voice onset time (VOT) and closure, were analysed with respect to preceding vowel length. The results suggest that beginning learners have the ability to learn gross segmental L2 durational characteristics but have difficulty acquiring the phonetic detail appropriate for native-like production. The learning of durational features varied according to preceding vowel length suggesting the influence of L1 syllable structure on L2 learning.

Coarticulatory Aggression and Direction of Coarticulation: An Ultrasound Study
Coarticulatory pattern can be varied based on the articulatory dynamics of the sound produced. The present study aims to analyze some of the coarticulatory patterns such as coarticulatory aggression and direction of coarticulation based on ultrasound imaging technique. Ten adult Kannada speakers participated as subjects. The stimuli consisted of V1CV2 sequences, with C corresponding to voiced/v...
متن کاملLenition of intervocalic stops in Amazonian Spanish bilinguals
Lenition can be considered a process of consonant weakening, such that there is less contrast between consonants and adjacent vowels. In the evolution of Spanish from Latin, the lenition process for stops follows a predictable pattern in the direction from voiceless stops to voiced stops to fricative and approximant realizations, which may end in deletion in the most extreme cases. While presen...
متن کاملAn Analysis of Spectral Attributes, Characterizing the Interaction of Lithuanian Voiceless Velar Stop Consonants with Their Pre- and Postvocalic Context
This work describes an investigation of spectral properties of the voiceless velar stop consonant [k] of Lithuanian. Investigations are based on two Lithuanian corpora: the isolated word corpus VDU-ISO4 and the corpus of short connected phrases VDU-TRI4. Investigations showed that spectra of a plosive [k] exhibit maxima at a frequency corresponding to the second formant of the vowel following p...
متن کاملThe phonetic value of the devocalized vowel in Japanese - in case of velar plosive
This study investigates how the native speakers of Japanese tell the differences of the words containing the devocalized vowels. The close vowels [K? and =/? devocalize in Japanese when they are situated between voiceless consonants and between pause and voiceless consonant. In this paper, we verify the hypothesis that the devocalized vowels are the voiceless fricatives. =M KÀVVQ? =M /ÀVVQ? =M ...
متن کاملVoicing Contrast of Intervocalic Plosives in Hungarian
The conflict of articulatory targets may result in neutralization of phonological oppositions, for instance in languages, where prevoiced and nonaspirated voiceless plosives constitute voicing contrast, voicing may be ceased leading to partial or entire devoiced plosives. The question has been arisen by several studies, whether the neutralization is entire regarding the phonetic voicing (type, ...
